Nothing sparks innovation quite like a tedious task that slows the entire process. While the world of construction shouldn't be a stranger to those living along the Gulf Coast, one of the fastest-growing areas of the country, the long process of turning a dream home or business from blueprint to finished product can be overwhelming for both builders and clients. Whether it’s selecting kitchen fixtures, door hardware, or cover lighting, finding the perfect local supplier quickly and efficiently can make or break the experience. To simplify this process, SpecBooks, an integrated system created by owner Robert Murray, allows users to create quotes and perform other essential business functions without the traditional hassle familiar to most home builders.

“The system really came out of necessity,” Murray said when asked about the origins of his company, mentioning the 2008 Financial Crisis as an important moment in its formation. At the time, Murray had postponed his last year of college to help his mother keep their family's decorative plumbing hardware business, located in Destin, Florida. He noted the arduous tasks of creating quotes, physical specification books, and pitch portfolios for clients as a constant headache for all involved. “I would have to scrub the internet, copying and pasting information from hundreds of different websites for days on end just to create one three-ring binder,” he said. “It was a horrific workflow that took way too much time, and highlighted a real need, both for builders and suppliers, for a new, streamlined system.”

Murray officially launched that system, SpecBooks, in 2012 and, within six months, had already attracted hundreds of users and turned his mother’s business around. “Users loved how easy and quickly you could create quotes and books,” he said, “We also added e-commerce connectivity, wishlists, and other integrations, as popularity increased, making things even easier for all involved.” Additionally, Murray said SpecBooks offers listings from 3,000 manufacturers, covering around 20 million SKUs. This allows clients to quickly pull up data verticals and pertinent information, reducing creation time from days to around 15 minutes.

“Generating a quote in SpecBooks automatically creates both a picture and spec book as well as easily integrating with other technology stacks,” he noted, going on to say how easy it is to make alterations, address problems without major overhauls, and allows users to easily retrieve old project data, even from the past, with just a click. On-site QR codes in each room provide quick access to specs, installation manuals, and other breakdowns. That easy access is evident in SpecBooks’ widespread popularity, with 10,000 locations nationwide and client annual sales of over $7 billion. “One client with 240 locations,” Murray said, “reported roughly 22 years of labor hours saved last year alone.”

Regarding his company’s focus on the local market and the future, Murray was particularly excited about their latest launches, including SpecBooks Pro, announced at the International Builders’ Show (IBS) back in February. This platform is for builders, contractors, and designers. “This is mainly focused on connecting pros with local or nearby suppliers.” SpecBooks Pro is a platform designed to streamline fixture selection, client approval, and the ordering and procurement process. It also reduces desk time with built-in review tools to eliminate change orders, rework, errors, and omissions while managing product SKUs through seamless third-party integration with software like QuickBooks, Procore, Ressio, Salesforce, JobTread, and more. “Helping brick-and-mortar businesses get back some of the market share they may lose to multi-million-dollar competition is a great way to ensure client loyalty and retention.”

An upcoming rollout is the launch of the “SpecBooks Intelligence” Initiative. According to Murray, this new system incorporates AI into the platform to remove additional bottlenecks, speed up projects, and add industry insights and reports. “AI also helps process high-volume orders, rolling steps such as quote creation, picture books, and spec books into one step, saving additional labor. Unlike other models, Murray said their system provides real, non-generated data from manufacturers’ SKUs, pricing lists, and install guides. “We’re planning for early 2027 for a direct-to-consumer connection, allowing local suppliers and pros to conduct their full business transactions on the platform.”

“It was a true startup story,” Murray laughed, remembering the small closet office above his mother’s showroom, “but it’s grown to be so much more.” By connecting professionals, local suppliers, and manufacturers, SpecBooks has built the premier vertically integrated ecosystem to support building projects from dream to reality. It delivers an innovative big-tech breath of fresh air for suppliers, pros, and homeowners.
